About Region 17
Sweet Adelines International divides its member choruses into regions, and the River Raisin Chorus is part of Great Lakes Harmony Region 17. This region includes parts of Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Sweet Adelines holds annual competitions for both choruses and quartets, and the competitions start at the regional level. Region 17’s competition is held each spring in Cleveland. Competitions represent exciting opportunities for Sweet Adelines members to travel, perform and learn. Judges give detailed feedback on performances, which can be used as a learning tool to improve performance of the individual as well as the group.
The region also offers many other educational opportunities, including a semiannual weekend retreat called Harmony Weekend where internationally certified faculty are invited to instruct members in the art of singing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. These weekends provide a wealth of information and wonderful opportunities for meeting and socializing with others in the region. You can learn more about Region 17 by clicking the link below.

What is barbershop?
Barbershop harmony is a style of vocal music characterized by four-part chords sung a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment). The melody is consistently sung by the lead, with the tenor harmonizing above the melody, the bass singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completing the chord. This singing style produces an overtone which is a higher, unsung note produced by the interaction produced by frequencies among the four voice parts.
